Animal Projects
Livestock & Hobby

Animal projects include working with either livestock or hobby animals. A livestock project, it is expected that upon the completion of the project, the animal is sold for use in the food industry. A hobby project is one in which an animal becomes a pet and would return home after fairs. Handlers may continue with the same animal or exchange it for another.



Animal Project (Livestock): Ages 9-18
Meat Goats
The Meat Goat Project introduces youth into the farming lifestyle. Members of the Goat Project work study the anatomy of goats, purchase their own goats, raise them to maturity, show and sell their efforts (the goats) in the auction at the county fair. (Meetings held October-August)

Animal Project (Livestock): Ages 9-18
Rabbits
Rabbits have become a great introductory project for new members and a reward continued project for returning members. With their small size, rabbits can easily fit into any home. Joining the Rabbit Project will introduce youth members the experience of raising, showing and delivering a completed project.

Beef
2010-2011 Transfer Project
The Beef Cattle Project introduces youth into the farming lifestyle. Members of the Beef Project to study the anatomy of beef cattle, purchase their own heifers, raise them to maturity, show and sell their efforts (the heifer/cow) in the auction at the county fair. (Meetings held October-August)

Llamas Llama Project Webpage Page
Llama is one hobby animal project that we provide at the county level. Members of the llama project will become familiar with the anatomy and care required for llamas, learn the valuable experiences of friendly competition and will greatly enjoy the lifestyle of showing llamas at fairs and festivals throughout the West Coast states and the nation. At times, the llama project will go on back-packing trips and offer their animals for community service events throughout the local region. (Meetings year-round). Owning a llama and acreage (land) may not be required.

Other Hobby Animal Projects: such as Guide Dogs-for the Blind are available at 4-H County level and can also be attend through our 4-H Community Club in Knights Ferry.

Non-Animal Projects
Hobby & Education

These projects overlap hobby and education.  There is no set time span for any of these projects, and they can last only a couple of months or extend throughout the year.  This group of projects will provide character building ideas. Contact the Orange Blossom 4-H Community Club Leader for more details on any project listed.


Non-Animal Project (Hobby): Ages 5-18
Community Services
Community Service is a project in which a group of people complete needed projects around the local and international community. In the past, the Community Service Project has sponsored food/livestock efforts in Asia, worked toward restoring fishing wildlife in the Stanislaus River, and organized funds and efforts to help those in need during the holiday season.

Traveling
Traveling is simply a project that allows youth to travel and experience local places/events with fellow 4-H friends. This can included going to the IMAX Theater in Dublin, ice skating in downtown Sacramento, and visiting the Sunset Magazine Gardens in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Non-Animal Project (Education): Ages 9-18
Veterinary Sciences
A county-wide, combined project works to understand the various aspects of veterinary science, under the guidance of Dr. Warner, a veterinarian Oakdale. This is rated as one of the top projects in the county. The project includes animal dissection and animal health problem solving.

Hi 4-H (High School Division)

Cloverbuds Primary/Junior 4-H (ages 5-9)
Primary 4-H youth come together to understand the way 4-H works and complete simple projects at the same time. This is more of a craft, small animal and community service project designed for young members.

Non-Animal Project (Education): Ages 9-18
Citizenship
A project held at the county level, members of this project investigate the workings of the local, state and national government. This may include trips to the State Capital and Washington DC. Youth work as a State team to understand the working of government and how they are a part of it.

Speech-Public Speaking
Youth work with a speech guide to learn how to present themselves in formal situations for both school and regional speechs. Typically, members attend Presentation Day at the county level, members may prepare a variety of speeches.

Scrap-booking
This craft/scrap booking project allows members to creatively collect their photos in self-inspired memory albums.

Sewing / Quilting
A top pick among projects, quilting allows youth to weave the threads for success.

Cake Decorating
A project the meets many times throughout the year youth create artistic delights.

Shooting Sports
A project that safely allows youth to experience the thrill of target shooting, participates review safety procedures and handling when shooting. This Project is lead by trained leaders who have completed the mandated safety courses governed by the Stanislaus County 4-H Office.
