California Poppy Planting
North Canyons Trail Planting Day Knights Ferry Covered Bridge Area
December 28, 2011; 11:00 AM
A Growing Success:
Following our first planting day in 2008. The youth group had success with the germination of the California Poppy's, Pink Calrkia, and Blue Lupines along Highway 108/120 near Knights Ferry.
See pictures below-right.
Project Background:
Inspired from a sight witnessed in Gorman, Ca, the Orange Blossom 4-H is working with Caltrans and the Army Corp of Engineers to broadcast one million wildflower seeds each year within the Knights Ferry, CA area.
Participating 4-H Parents & Youth:
For work on State highways, youth must be 16 yrs. or older. For every five (5) youth members we have to have an adult twenty-one (21) or older. Safety and progress of the site will be organized and scheduled by Kenny J. Peterson (209-968-5372) in conjunction with the Caltrans Sonora Maintenance Station.
There is no age limtiation for plantings taking place near the Knights Ferry Covered Bridge locations.
Seed Selection:
Seed selection was based off the list provided by EDAW San Francisco for the river restoration project being complete by the City of Modesto in the TRRP (Tuolumne River Regional Park) at Gateway Parcel.

This picture was taken from the Gorman Wildflower Project along I-5 as drivers past over the “Grapevine” into Los Angeles. In just a few years we will have identical painted hillsides in Stanislaus and Tuolumne Counties.
